The South Carolina Building

On Saturday, April 26, 2008 the South Carolina Dormitory was burned to make it ready for demolition. The South Carolina Building was one of the original buildings on campus. It was built in 1924 and originally housed the smaller children and sibling groups of children. Most Alumni of the Home refer to the building as the "Nursery". Davidson County Community College utilized the old South Carolina Building for Fire Fighters' Training. During the week prior to the actual burning of the building, Arson Investigators used the interior of the building for Training. On Saturday several area fire Departments were able to train a large number of fire fighters in various aspects of fire fighting. At approximately 4:30 the building was set on fire one last time and allowed to burn. The process of completely removing the remnants of the old building is moving along smoothly. The South Carolina Building was a proud old structure and has served children and the Children's Home well for over 80 years. Hopefully, her final blaze will have "trained" a firefighter in some technique that will save someone's life.
